Lakeland Walks

Hardknott, Our Final Wainwright!

We parked at Cockley Beck and walked along the roman road towards Back Hall. The path goes in front of the farm, through the fields, over a couple of stiles and onto the fellside heading up towards Peathill Crag. (Vague paths but not really a problem, a bit boggy in one or two places though.) Turning right when reaching the bridleway coming from Harter fell to reach the top of Hardknott Pass. We went right along the road to the path on the left going up to Border end and headed up it bearing slightly left to reach the top.

You have to pause a while to admire the views down Eskdale, towards the Scafells and Coniston Fells.

We went over the edge of Border End on a faint path to reach another faint one heading to Eskdale Needle. (The paths were a bit dodgy so if you are not  really confident I would not  bother going down them, just head straight over to the summit of Hardknott). From the needle we went up the fell side to reach the summit (not really a path, but not hard to find the way).

We sat quite a while enjoying our bottle of celebratory wine, and our dog had a bone (he would have enjoyed wine too but he wasn't given the chance!) before continuing along the ridge of the fell to reach the bridleway into Moasdale, and followed this track (quite boggy in places, and it had been dry for a while too, could be much worse in bad weather) back to reach the bottom of Hardknott pass and the car.

This was a fabulous walk, outstanding views all around (apart from out to the west coast which was thick cloud) and not strenuous, could be even less effort if you parked at the top of the pass and just went up Border End, to the summit of Hardknott then back to the car. Although the paths are not marked on the map they are there and are not hard to follow from the road  and over the fell.
